Planet Zoo 2 First Impressions: Is It Worth Taking the Plunge?

I was incredibly excited when Planet Zoo 2 was first announced.

I’m long past being aggravated by the modern gaming cycle—the one that requires us to buy dozens of expansions to fully realise a game. That’s just how developers survive these days. They need to keep making money, and we aren't forced to buy anything we don’t want to. But of course, I will buy them, because I want to! I’m perfectly happy to support a game as long as I get actual value for my money.

Following the very mixed launch of Frontier's Planet Coaster 2, I wasn’t expecting a flawless reception for Planet Zoo 2—and the community didn't disappoint. Early Steam reviews were either deeply scathing or wildly enthusiastic, with very few measured opinions in between. I initially considered holding off on my purchase. However, the allure of the brand-new aviaries and aquariums was too strong. I took the plunge yesterday.

Honestly? I’m absolutely loving it so far.

What Makes Planet Zoo 2 Shine

  • Stunning New Reserves: The environments are gorgeous, and the mechanics feel great. I’m having a blast driving around in the jeep trying to capture the best possible research photos.

  • Improved UI & Pathing: The user interface—which heavily mirrors Planet Coaster 2—is much more intuitive than the first game. Laying down paths and habitat barriers is significantly less frustrating this time around.

  • Engaging Career Mode: The career path is highly engaging and scales beautifully in difficulty. This likely depends on your starting choice (New Player, Returning Player, or Expert). I chose Returning Player; I’ve played the original game for years, but I definitely wouldn't call myself an expert.

  • Flawless Performance: The game looks breathtakingly beautiful and runs incredibly smoothly on my PC.

The Verdict (So Far)

My early review is highly enthusiastic, with one major proviso: I have only played the career path so far. I can’t yet comment on Sandbox or Franchise modes, and Challenge mode hasn't been released yet.

Over to You!
