So, I’ve really been looking forward to Beastmaster (BST) arriving in Final Fantasy XIV! It is one of my absolute favourite jobs from Final Fantasy XI. While I know some players are disappointed, I’m not especially bothered that it’s a Limited Job. I usually only play my BST in FFXI for a bit of solo fun anyway, so I plan to do the exact same thing here in FFXIV.
If you are ready to start your own taming journey, here is everything you need to know to unlock the job and summon your very first pet.
Unlock Requirements
Before you head out, make sure you meet the following criteria:
- Have at least one Disciple of War or Magic job at Level 50.
- Complete the A Realm Reborn main scenario quest "The Ultimate Weapon".
Finding the Quest
If you meet the requirements, head over to the Carline Canopy in Gridania. Look for an NPC named the Excited Adventurer.
He will tell you about a strange beast spotted in Sorrel Haven (just northwest of the Bentbranch Meadows aetheryte) and send you to investigate. Once you arrive, you’ll watch a couple of cutscenes—no spoilers here!—and meet your new Beastmaster trainer, J'yhuh Tia.

Equipping Your Gear
Accept J'yhuh's offer, and you will receive a job coffer containing your level 1 gear and a Cu Sith Gourd. To officially become a Beastmaster, open your menu and:
- Equip the one-handed axe from your Armoury Chest. (I absolutely loved the NPC’s explanation that the axe is meant for chopping down brambles in the wilds rather than actual fighting!)
- Equip the BST starter gear (which looks fantastic, by the way).
- Use the Cu Sith Gourd from your inventory.
How to Summon Your First Pet
J'yhuh Tia will suggest travelling to The Bannock for some practice, which involves summoning your first companion, the Cu Sith. The process is a little unique, so here are the exact steps to follow:
- Open your Character menu from the main menu.
- Click on Master's Bestiary to view your collected beasts (you will find this located right below the Blue Magic Spellbook).
- Find Cu Sith in your list of tamed familiars.
- Right-click the name (or press X / Square on your controller) and assign it to your first Battlehorn from the drop-down menu.
- Click the Battlehorn icon on your hotbar to summon your pet!

Taming Your Next Beasts
With your Cu Sith by your side, J'yhuh Tia sends you off to familiarise yourself with the job and collect two additional pets for your Bestiary. He recommends checking out Squirrels in the Central Shroud and Lost Sheep in Middle La Noscea.
Here is how the taming mechanic works:
- Check the Level: You cannot tame a beast unless its level is equal to or lower than yours.
- Gauge the Beast: Use the Gauge ability on your hotbar. This tells you how easy the creature is to tame.
- Tame and Battle: Use the Tame ability to trigger a battle. Defeat the creature, and it will usually drop straight into your Bestiary. If it doesn’t work the first time, simply defeat another one of the same type until it does!
Over to You!
How are you enjoying Beastmaster so far? Are you disappointed that it’s a Limited Job like Blue Mage, or are you just excited to run around with some furry friends? Let me know in the comments below!
Not played BST yet, but BLU has been one of my FF series favourites. Can see why these jobs are only able to represented by the limited job system, would have been a nightmare fitting them otherwise.
Yeah, BST is very busy, and I’m only level 10 so far. But I’m enjoying it a lot
