Why the Sims 4 Legacy Challenge Cured My “Save Fatigue”

So, one of my perennial problems in the ten years I’ve been playing The Sims 4 has been sticking with a Save for more than a few weeks. Generally, I’ve stuck with them for less than a few weeks, honestly! Because I’ve never had a particular direction I wanted to go in. Earn money, decorate a lot, find a partner, have kids... hmmm, now what?

Then I discovered the Sims 4 Legacy Challenge.

If you don’t already know, this is a very popular format created by the community in which a player follows a set of rules to progress one family through ten generations. It’s a concept that was thought up during The Sims 2 era by a player called Pinstar. Clearly, I absolutely don’t read enough about the games I play, because I only discovered it a couple of years ago! But I love it. It’s such a game-changer.

The Traditional Legacy Rules

There are some rules for a traditional legacy challenge that might be too restrictive for some:

  • The Setup: Start the save with one single young adult Sim, buy an empty 50 by 50 lot, and use cheats to reduce your funds to 1,800 simoleons.
  • The Boundary: Stay on that exact same lot for all ten generations (at least with the main family).
  • No Cheats: No gameplay cheats are allowed after that initial funds reduction.
  • Succession: You must pick specific inheritance rules from the start (only daughters, for example).

Putting My Own Spin On It

Lots of variations have sprung up since the early days, of course, and the rules players choose to impose upon themselves have become very wide-ranging.

The famous Not So Berry Challenge by lilsimsie is currently very popular, and I’m planning to take a look at that one myself. However, I’ve already started a Save for the Pack Legacy Challenge by Rosannatxt, which I’m very excited about!

I’ll be posting weekly updates on my blog tracking my family's chaos, triumphs, and heartbreaks, so stay tuned if you want to find out more.

Over to you: Are you a traditional legacy player, or do you prefer the modern, colorful rule variations? Let me know in the comments below!

I used to write dramatic stories for my Sims when I first started (when the first game was released… ouch), but I eventually stopped, I was too busy making them suffer! I’ve never done a Sims challenge either, so interested to see how this goes!
